This weekend, we sat down to film our latest Trekkie Girls vBlog to record our reaction to the exciting news that Destination Star Trek is coming back to celebrate the 50th anniversary. At the time, we knew it was going to be held 7-9th October 2016 at a UK location. This was all specified in an email and the Destination Star Trek landing page which told us to wait until 2nd February to receive more details including exact location, first guests announcement and ticket sales.
But then things got exciting. Just before filming, William Shatner tweeted this gem!
Not only does he give away the location, but he confirms his attendance! woohoo!
But there’s still lots to look forward to with Tuesday’s email. We still need to know which convention centre, so we can make travel and accommodation arrangements. And from the email it sounds like there are additional guests to be announced too.
William Shatner is a fantastic first guest though. It wouldn’t be a celebration of Star Trek without him!
So what info have we been able to scrap together?
- There is a change in the organisation of this years event. The operational aspects are being being ran by Massive Events in association with Showmasters and Media 10 who hold the license with CBS to run official Star Trek conventions.
- This is the largest and only official 50th anniversary celebration event for Star Trek in Europe this year. AND IT’S RIGHT HERE IN THE UK!!!
- When we asked the organisers what they thought about William Shatners tweet they were having a good laugh about it and couldn’t be happier that Captain Kirk of all people had announced their event! (We would have had trouble sending him to the brig too!)
- the Trekkie Girls will be involved in this event, as we have been since DST first beamed down to London in 2012.
The reception from us Trekkies regarding this news has been incredibly positive and plans are being made across the continent to attend.
Here is our somewhat less coherent (and less sober) reaction!
