We spoke to UK Conventions Managing Director Robert Dyer about their exclusive variant cover.

How did UK Conventions Limited come to produce a variant cover?
I have been a Star Trek fan all my life.  I grew up watching the adventures of Captain James T. Kirk and the Enterprise crew on a weekly basis, so it was only natural that my love for Star Trek impacted my decision on which comic book franchise my company should choose when we decided we wanted to produce a comic book variant. Once we had decided on Star Trek for our first variant, I personally contacted IDW Publishing who held the license to produce all of the Official Star Trek comics and we moved forward from there.

They are limited edition, available worldwide, where can people buy?

The comic is limited to 1701 copies worldwide, and each comes with a numbered certificate of authenticity.  Anyone in the United Kingdom or Europe wishing to purchase a copy of the comic can do so through The Sci-Fi Shop and anyone in North America can purchase a copy from our exclusive US distributor Scifi-collector.com

Could you tell us about the artist?

We were really excited to work with Stephen Molnar on the Enterprise Edition variant of Star Trek Countdown to Darkness.  Stephen produced a stunning cover, with John Rauch providing the colours.  As Stephen and John are currently the lead artist and colourist for IDW’s Star Trek: The Ongoing Series it was fantastic to have them involved with the Enterprise Edition, especially as they only worked on our variant and no others for this issue.

Our Verdict:

If we had to pick between this and the main version featuring just Kirk, it’s easy. We’d go for this one.
One of the highlights from the ’09 movie was the moment when you first see the Enterprise NCC 1701. She is stunning, oozes charisma and is every bit as much a leading character as Kirk, Spock and cohort. That is why we are glad to see her take her rightful place on the cover of this exclusive edition.

And we’re not the only ones who think so, TrekMovie in their review also cite the Enterprise Edition as their favourite.

We are impressed by the little details, things that only the fan would notice (or go to the effort of putting in a comic) such as custom detailing the barcode.
