Through the Periscope

Following on from last Saturday's successful Live Chat, we have decided to make it a regular thing. Looking at all of the platforms for streaming we have chosen to trial Periscope as it's simple, free and can be linked to Twitter. If you're a Periscope user, be sure to follow us @TrekkieGirls. We'll be sampling it for the first time this Sunday as we report live from a Star Trek: The Ultimate Voyage at The Royal Albert Hall.  Dare we admit that we have even bought a selfie stick so we are no longer reliant on the kindness of strangers to record us! ... Although whether we are capable of revealing our selfie stick in public is another matter. The shame!! Stand by for dates for our next live episodes.

Star Trek: The Ultimate Voyage Wishlist

After our cheeky question to Ron Jones (Star Trek TNG Composer) asking what can we expect from this Sunday's concert being held at the Royal Albert Hall, we have been wondering what we'd like to hear. We were pleased and fascinated by something that Ron said when we spoke to him, that they'll be a lot of surprises and that they dug deep to find the pieces of music that aren't embedded into the fans consciousness. This makes it particularly hard to pick out the 'best musical scores' over our favourite scenes across the Star Trek franchise. But here's a few!... The Corbomite Manoeuvre [youtube=http://youtu.be/HQVsUQgZN6I#t=0m39s] This is very familiar to the fans but there is something iconic about this music. I'm not sure what feeling it was meant to evoke or what atmosphere it was trying to create but it goes wonderfully with Kirks blasé attitude towards Blalok. Ron Jones Interview – Star Trek The Ulimate Voyage

Ahead of Sunday's trektastic concert at the Royal Albert Hall, we were kindly offered the opportunity to talk to Ron Jones who was the composer on Star Trek The Next Generation on seasons 1-4. Ron will be appearing as a guest conductor at Star Trek The Ultimate Voyage on Sunday 1st November and we understand there are still some tickets left, but be quick! TGs: You continued the theme of classical music scores in to TNG, do you know how that decision came about? RJ: There was a lot of discussion between Gene Roddenberry and Bob Justman. Paramount and the executive side were worried as TNG was so different with a bald British captain, a Klingon on the bridge, a different cast. They were worried that the TOS fans would see this and be in shock. They told us liberally to use weed out the theme from Jerry Goldsmith and Alexander Courage's themes from … Continue Reading ››

The Original TiT’s Season 3 TNG Review: Pt 2

Well, if they upped the ante with Season 3, then they completely smashed it through the roof with the Season finale cliffhanger! How on EARTH did you guys wait an entire year for the new Season to start? I could scarcely get the DVDs swapped over quick enough! From the off, you just know there’s something a foot – the music is eerie and there’s a certain note of desperation in Picard’s voice as he records his “Captain’s log”. I don’t recall an ‘opener’ (before the credits roll) as short as that in any of the episodes I’d watched up to that point? It’s like, okay, brief introduction, let’s get the hell on with the story! And by God, didn’t they do that?! I could literally bang on about these two episodes FOREVER! So much content. So many unanswered questions. Terrific acting (and directing!). My highlights of TBOBW included: -

Virtual Reality Tour of the Enterprise D

This preview of the VR tour of the Ent-D has been floating around a couple of days. We finally sat down to watch it. We are now convinced that if holodecks were to ever become a thing. We would be full blown Barclay style holo-addicts. You'll find us at Holo's Anonymous on a tuesday evening saying 'It's been 5 weeks since my last holosuite but I relapsed bad last night. I slept in my holographic quarters on board the Ent D again. Then I ran Vulcan Love Slave two in the holographic ships holodeck! I had to say 'computer end program' 6 times to get out!" As for this preview of the Enterprise. Yep we'd live there. We'd buy an Oculus Rift for this! Friendly request though. Please move Ten Forward off deck two. *Battling our nit-picking stereotype here*

The Red Shirt Diaries Season 2 – A chat with Ashley

After binge watching S1 of The Red Shirt Diaries (thanks for joining us on our tweet-along!) we got in touch with Ashley (aka Ensign Williams) for a chat before the launch of Season 2. Season 2 launched last week with the Menagarie pt 1 & 2 now available and it continues it's fitting tribute to TOS with its wit, style and improved fancy visual effects! How did you get started with RSD? I had had the idea for THE RED SHIRT DIARIES right after I graduated from university with the intent of building a show around a rewatch of TOS. I'd never seen TOS in order and blogs are such a popular medium that it seemed a natural match. When I met Jason Inman I told him about the idea and he was able to bring the skills and understanding of youtube to THE RED SHIRT DIARIES and start it into production. (for those who don't … Continue Reading ››

Portal 47 Mission Briefing

If you follow Larry Nemecek's Trekland Blog (and if you don't, you can't sit with us!) you would have heard about this mysterious Portal 47. We've been curious about this like a lowly officer is curious about the Omega directive, but our wait is over. On Wednesday 9th September at 19.00 Pacific Time, 22.00 Eastern Time or 03.00 on Thursday in the UK, Mr Trekland himself will reveal all! And you can hear for yourself via a teleconference (let's call it subspace!) or listen online. You can sign up for yourself to get information direct from the source. Larry informs us that he is hoping to add some European friendly times in the future so we don't miss out (although dealing with us sleepy/drunk Brits is so much more fun!). Larry Nemecek is immensely popular at conventions, podcasts and all over the Trek Community for his unique insider knowledge into the franchise. … Continue Reading ››
