It's that time of year again for one of our convention staples. Showmaster's London Film and Comic Con.
We've been attending these for years. It feels like that familiar family holiday we take together. But this year stands out. This year it was BIG!! There was some serious guest star pulling power happening.
We heard that it was going to be hot and that it was crazy busy (It always seems to fall on the hottest day of the year!). We prepared ourselves mentally and physically for this away mission. Lots of water, tiny TNG skant dresses, water, we even bought new boots that were super comfy (sign that we're getting old). Armed with this and psyching ourselves up for standing around in a sweaty moshpit, we were actually relieved to find it wasn't as bad as we had imagined it to be.
When Startrek.com tweeted the news that an officially licenced Bluetooth Commuicator that connects to your phone, is about to hit the market we didn't need to read too much more to shout out "shut up and take my Latinum!"
But where in the UK can we get our hands on this bleeping beauty!?
Set coordinates for Firebox.com to get your preorder in now. The bad news is it's not available until January 2016. The good news is that it means it's just in time for next years 50 year anniversary celebration of Star Trek (more on that to follow). We can't wait to hang up on a PPI claim call in this!
Here's all the nitty-gritty details should you require more convincing:
Bluetooth handset that pairs with your mobile phone
Make and receive mobile telephone calls like a fully-fledged Starfleet commander
Painstakingly highly-detailed and accurate to the original
We're going back to one of our favourite events of the year London Film and Comic Con! And 'going back' is a theme this year with a Back To The Future reunion no less!
Taking place in the Olympia Hall on Friday 17th July, Saturday 18th and Sunday the 19th of July 2015 be sure to book your tickets fast as the ever popular show has even more wow factor this year to attract the crowds.
The guest that has sent shockwaves through geekdom was the big announcement that Michael J Fox will be joining Christopher Lloyd, Claudia Wells, Donald Fullilove, Jeffrey Weissman and Lea Thompson for a BTTF cast reunion. You need super tickets for MJF but it's so rare, it's got to be worth it.
Showmasters have also 'obtained' (for want of a better word!) some more unique guests such as Sigorney Weaver and Neve Campbell! Amazing, how do they get … Continue Reading ››
We had heard about Michael Dorn's pitch for a Trek Spin-off based on Worf but it wasn't until we tuned in to Dorn's AMA on Reddit that we learnt more about this exciting venture.
It seems every third Tuesday there is another Trek-series rumour circulating but this one, of all of them, has got us really excited.
Why? Well for many reasons but here's our top three.
1. It's based in the prime universe. Nuff said.
2, It's based after the events of Deep Space Nine but before Nemesis. Which puts it between 2375 - 2379. Hopefully it can shed some light on the rebuilding of the Federation, Cardassian, Klingon and Romulan empires following the Dominion War. It could also feature the return of Voyager and even explain why Worf appears on the Enterprise at the beginning of Nemesis!
3, It's Worf! Easily the most developed Character in the … Continue Reading ››
So, I embarked on my TNG Season 2 quest with marked trepidation. My head had been filled with somewhat negative thoughts (“Dr Crusher isn’t in it”; “just get through it – it gets WAY better mid-Season 3”), so my expectations admittedly weren’t very high. At least it’s only a short season of just 22 episodes I thought to myself (thanks to a writer’s strike I’m reliably informed). Well, I have to say I was quite pleasantly surprised…
Right, first things first, let’s just get this one out of the way: Pulaski. The Star Trek equivalent of Marmite.
I have to admit, I disliked her immensely from the very beginning (hate is a strong word), and although I had somewhat warmed to her by the time we got to the likes of “Pen Pals” and “Samaritan Snare” (where she had begun to show an iota of compassion), I … Continue Reading ››
It's polling day here in the UK and who said politics can't be fun? Last week we compared Trek characters to politician personalities and today we thought we'd ask; what would be the key campaigning topics if we were living in the 24th Century. Rather than #GE2015 it's #GE2394
Romulas
Any Federation Presidential candidate worth their salt will have a strategy in place for dealing with the repercussions of Romulus's demise. Hopefully this will encourage the Vulcan/Romulan unification process further.
We'd also be keen to hear their stance on Remans, who's world would have been destroyed by the same Super-nova. What efforts are taking place to repatriate them with their Roman brothers and Sisters and Vulcan cousins?
Klingon and Cardassian Empires
These empires are attempting to recover from being decimated by the Dominion War. The Federation should not assume they are weak and no threat. In times of desperation, … Continue Reading ››
Having worked in politics, this is the first year in my adult voting life that I won't be participating in a general election. (campaigning that is, I'm going to vote of course!)
Star Trek very much influenced my decision to go in to politics so for this blog post I'd like to look at some of the Trek characters that fit in to some of the real life politician personality types I have encountered.
This is just for fun. But I'd love to hear your thoughts and your suggestions.
The Single Issue GuyChief O'Brien would be the type of politician who is always campaigning tirelessly for the same thing. He has a singular focus, he went in to politics to sort out transporter technology regulation, the Cardassian encroachment of Federation territories or the rights of non-comm officers. The chamber could be talking about the furtherest thing from his pet subject, but he'll find a … Continue Reading ››
TrekMovie are reporting that the title for the third Star Trek reboot movie is titled 'Beyond':
TrekMovie.com has it on good authority that Star Trek Beyond is being used for the title of the new Trek film. What we do know is that the name has been registered with the Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA), a step that typically signifies a title has been settled on for an upcoming movie. It is possible, given Bad Robot’s history of secrecy and pretense, that this is merely a decoy name registered to stir up conjecture amongst the media and fans. But, the official title will need to be registered with the MPAA before the film’s release, and given the timeline, it seems likely that such a decision would be made now.
Source: TrekMovieAdmittedly, when they announced the last movie as 'Into Darkness', we let out a little sigh. Star Trek is … Continue Reading ››
This image of Astronaut Samantha Cristoforetti wearing a Starfleet uniform whilst welcoming the Dragon vehicle to the International Space Station, seems to be available on every hailing frequency we open. And with good reason, it's probably the greatest picture from space ever taken! First picture of the Earth taken from space? Meh! Rocking the Janeway look whilst orbiting the planet - legendary! With a growing list of Astronauts citing Star Trek as their inspiration, it demonstrates what a powerful influence the utopian view of Trek has had on generations. Almost 50 years in to its reign and we are at last moving well past the 'Trekkie in the basement' image and seeing scientists, world leaders, activists and philanthropists, all crediting Star Trek as their inspiration
What we love most about this is that Samantha must have insisted this got packed for her trip. Imagine what items you have to pack; 7 pairs … Continue Reading ››
24th Century Socialites. 21st Century high functioning nerds. We go to Star Trek Conventions and talk about Star Trek a lot.
