Star Trek In Concert at The Royal Albert Hall Review

As part of the Royal Albert Hall's Films in Concert, two showings of Star Trek were shown over the weekend, in conjunction with the Hall's Festival of Science. On Saturday the 2009 JJ Abrams Star Trek movie was performed and on Sunday it was Star Trek Beyond. We attended the Sunday concert and despite having attended a few Star Trek themed concerts at this venue, it always feels as if we are experiencing it for the first time when we go to the Royal Albert Hall.
The Concert
Star Trek Beyond musical score royal albert hall So why watch a movie that we have seen many times before at the Royal Albert Hall?  Because this time we're not just watching it, the priority is to listen. We all love the effect music has on motion pictures but hearing it performed live by the London Philharmonic Orchestra and Choir is … Continue Reading ››

Sci-Fi Ball – Day Two

Day two of the Sci-if Ball and after a nice big fry up breakfast we settled into the main hall to listen to our favourite guests. IMG_0389

Gary Graham

The day started with a talk by Gary Graham who is best known (to us!) for his role as Ambassador Soval in Enterprise. https://twitter.com/trekkiegirls/status/959746909672964096 Gary spoke about how he got the part of Soval and thought he was going to be a one-off appearance in the pilot episode. He also spoke to Rick Berman for a briefing on how Vulcans think, feel and behave. https://twitter.com/trekkiegirls/status/959754444912123904 Highlight: Gary has a great sense of humour and is a complete contrast to Soval. So it was extra delightful when he went full on Vulcan at the end of the talk and give us the customary Vulcan greeting. https://twitter.com/trekkiegirls/status/959755730143338496 Weird bit: https://twitter.com/trekkiegirls/status/959752058525151232

For those unfamiliar with the fan series Star Trek Continues, we highly recommend you give … Continue Reading ››

Representing Star Trek are Terry Farrell (Jadzia Dax, DS9), vic Mignogna (Captain Kirk, ST: Continues), Chris Doohan (ST 09, Into Darkness and St Continues) and Gary Graham (Ambassador Soval, ENT). The event is on all weekend and we highly suggest you drop all your plans and join us. https://twitter.com/trekkiegirls/status/959473283027513344 We spent the afternoon interviewing the guests asking them about their time in Star Trek. Be sure to check back early next week when these will be posted. The hotel has been assimilated and includes the fantastic Star Trek sets from the USS Riker's Beard which you are free to enjoy and take your photo with. 7aa86789-e929-4ca0-a217-b130f26110b2 The opening ceremony was like a warp core explosion of energy with all guests taking the stage. STLV – Writers Panel – Brannon Braga and Andrew Bormanis

Brannon Braga (who is responsible for writing and producing most Star Trek TNG, VOY and ENT episodes we all love, plus Generations and First Contact) appeared with Andre Bormanis (science consultant and writer) for a very open and transparent discussion on writing for Star Trek. I'll admit that I'm big fans of them personally. I love how Braga has a typical writers personality; self-depreciative and introverted despite being able to engage a large audience and clearly a very talented man. Andre Bormanis is someone I friended on Facebook in that way you friend people on Facebook you have never met and the only interaction is the occasional 'liking' of posts. But from this vague connection I've gained an affinity towards him. Here's what was revealed: https://twitter.com/TrekkieGirls/status/893967797532844032 https://twitter.com/TrekkieGirls/status/893966649774063616 https://twitter.com/TrekkieGirls/status/893966986954162177 https://twitter.com/TrekkieGirls/status/893972251069915136 https://twitter.com/TrekkieGirls/status/893975796435501057 https://twitter.com/TrekkieGirls/status/893973166321582080 https://twitter.com/TrekkieGirls/status/893969137013145603 Conclusion: What was refreshing about this panel was the sheer honesty. It's the difference between an ongoing series which has a marketing campaign driving it … Continue Reading ››

Star Trek Las Vegas – The Inner Light Panel

Saturday at Star Trek Las Vegas featured two of my personal favourite panels of the week. The Writers panel with Brannon Braga and Andre Bormanis and the Inner Light panel with Sir Patrick Stewart, Margot Rose (Eline) and Morgan Gendel (writer).
The Inner Light Panel
Most panels at conventions are actors coming on stage, cracking a few jokes and taking a bunch of Q&As from the audience. This panel was someone different. It was well moderated by Adam from Creation Entertainment and was an analysis/review of an episode hailed as one of the best Star Trek episodes of all time. In fact in a poll of favourite Star Trek episodes, Inner Light came second of ALL EPISODES EVER. (Poll by StarTrek.com) In case you have Bendii syndrome and have forgotten, The Inner Light is the episode where Picard is given the memories of an alien from a civilisation whose planet is dying. He lives a lifetime … Continue Reading ››

Saturday at Star Trek Las Vegas – William Shatner, Brent Spiner +LeVar Burton Panels

Saturday at Star Trek Las Vegas was as packed with Star Trek goodness as a type 15 shuttlepod on a supply mission.
William Shatner
https://twitter.com/TrekkieGirls/status/893926830415138816 Scott Mantz (our favourite moderator) spoke to William Shatner and their friendship and camaraderie shone through. Shatner is a man who shows no sign of slowing down. He has an ability to hold the audience with his dry wit and his well....Shatnerisms! He alluded to a new project to be announced this week involving Virtual Reality and something that 'had never been done before'? It will also be of no surprise to learn that he has a new book coming out! No really! There were a few awkward question from audience saying that a scene was written for Captain Kirk in Star Trek 09. Shatner vehemently disputed it. https://twitter.com/TrekkieGirls/status/893931939899428864 Conclusion: Beneath his put-down sense of humour William Shatner obviously functions on a deep level. I've often said that he sounds like a … Continue Reading ››

STLV The Next Generation 30th Anniversary Panel – New revelations!

STLV TNG 30 The highly anticipated TNG 30th anniversary panel on Friday night was undoubtedly the jewel in the Sacred Chalice of Rixx for Star Trek Las Vegas. It boasted a full lineup of The Next Generation crew which ALMOST happened, except Jonathan Frakes' flight got cancelled due to weather. It would have been Frakes. Nonetheless, John de Lancie and Denise Crosby stepped up to step in, and honestly I think that's the last we heard of them all night! https://twitter.com/TrekkieGirls/status/893649158736715776   They start by sharing their stories of conversations with Gene Roddenberry. For example LeVar Burton once asked him why Geordi was blind, surely by the 24th Century they would have cured blindness and they'd be no need for a VISOR? Gene's response was "How do you know your sight isn't considered better?" The same was true with Data's skin colour and Picard's baldness. We were getting hung up on 20th Century standards … Continue Reading ››
